Little Brown Kiwi is mindful of, and acts in the interests of the environment. Examples include enhancing the natural environment by tree planting, maintaining planting sites, learning about and getting involved in pest trapping initiatives and helping native species such as the North Island brown kiwi. Reducing plastic by banning single use plastic bottles and providing reusable lunch boxes for our students. Also encouraging staff to reuse coffee cups by supplying these to them. Vehicles are used which are fit for purpose and are planned to meet the size of the group. Recycling is encouraged and modelled at each place we stay.
In addition to this, Little Brown Kiwi teaches Leave No Trace principles to groups which is particularly important in the outdoors. Maori concepts of sustainability are communicated, which consider that the environment is a living and breathing entity – Eg Lake Waikaremoana in Te Urewera and the Whanganui River.
Little Brown Kiwi was privileged to have been selected as a finalist in the Restoring Nature category at the Sustainable Business Network Awards, which is a credit to all of our partners who are working tirelessly and selflessly for a future New Zealand.
